Navigating the System: Key Resources for Neurodivergent Adults & Families

At Where the Pieces Meet, our mission goes beyond monthly events. We're dedicated to empowering neurodivergent adults and their families with the information and tools they need to thrive. Navigating the world of support, services, and community can be complex, so we've compiled a list of valuable resources to help light the way.

Understanding Your Rights & Services:

  • Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) - Developmental Disabilities Division: This is your state-level hub for services. They oversee programs that can provide support for independent living, employment, and community integration. Understanding their offerings is crucial for accessing long-term aid.

  • Alabama Medicaid Waiver Programs (e.g., Intellectual Disabilities Waiver, Autism Waiver): These programs can provide funding for a wide range of services, from residential support to employment training and personal care. Eligibility can be complex, but they are a vital resource for many families.

Advocacy & Support Networks:

  • The Arc of Alabama: A powerful advocacy organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and actively supporting their full inclusion in the community. They offer resources, support, and legislative advocacy.

  • Autism Support of Alabama: Focused specifically on autism, they provide support, education, and advocacy for individuals and families affected by autism throughout the state. They often host events and have a wealth of information.

Community & Continued Learning (Local & Online):

  • Local Disability Resource Centers: Check for independent living centers or disability services offices in Baldwin County or nearby Mobile. These centers can offer personalized guidance, peer support, and connections to local services.

  • Online Neurodiversity Forums/Groups: While not always Alabama-specific, moderated online communities can offer peer support, shared experiences, and advice from a wider network of neurodivergent adults and caregivers.

We know this can be a lot of information, but remember, you're not alone. Where the Pieces Meet is here not just for social connection, but to help build a stronger, more informed community.
